How Long Can You Extend a Visa on Arrival in Bali?

Indonesia offers two types of Visa on Arrival: VOA (Visa on Arrival) and e-VOA (Electronic Visa on Arrival). Both visas are initially valid for 30 days and can be extended once for an additional 30 days.

This means you can stay in Indonesia for a maximum of 60 days on a VOA or e-VOA.

After the 60-day period expires, you must leave Indonesia. If you wish to continue staying in the country, you will need to exit and apply for a new visa before returning.

I recommend applying for an e-VOA from the start. The main advantage is that it can be extended online without visiting an immigration office.

👉 I explained how to get an e-VOA for Indonesia

If you received a regular VOA upon arrival at the airport, you’ll need to visit an immigration office to extend it, as a standard VOA cannot be extended online.

How to Extend an e-VOA Online

Time needed: 10 minutes

If you applied for your Visa on Arrival online, you can also extend it online through your account on the Indonesian Immigration website: evisa.imigrasi.go.id

How to Extend a VOA Through a Visa Agent

Before December 2022, Indonesia only offered the standard Visa on Arrival (VOA). To extend it, you had two options: do it yourself or use a visa agent. The DIY route is only for the most patient travelers — and here’s why.

To extend a regular VOA on your own, you typically need to visit the immigration office three times:

  1. Submit your application
  2. Provide fingerprints and have your photo taken
  3. Collect your passport

Each visit usually takes around three hours, including travel time. In total, the extension process can easily consume nine hours of your time.

A visa agent can eliminate two of those trips and save you about six hours. The agent submits the application and collects your passport on your behalf. You only need to visit the immigration office once to provide your biometric data and have your photo taken.

✅ The math is simple: for an extra $25, you save at least six hours. If your time is worth more than $4 per hour, hiring an agent is probably the better deal.

One of the popular visa agencies in Bali is Bali Love Consulting. When I used their service, a VOA extension cost 900,000 IDR. They arranged a courier to pick up my passport and deliver it back once the extension was completed, making the process almost effortless.

How to Extend a VOA Yourself at an Immigration Office

Well, you’re a brave one. I’ll explain how to do it, but fair warning: extending a VOA yourself is usually not worth the time and effort.

1️⃣ Submit Your Documents

Before visiting the immigration office, prepare the following:

  • The name, address, and phone number of a local sponsor in Bali. I’ve heard that almost anyone can act as a sponsor, even the owner of your guesthouse, as immigration rarely checks this information.
  • A photocopy of your passport’s photo page.
  • A printed copy of your onward or return ticket (a confirmed ticket or temporary booking from Kupitrip).
  • Your original passport.

Then visit any immigration office in Bali. Immigration offices are generally open from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with a lunch break from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM.

At the office:

  • Fill out the visa extension application form (sample)
  • Ask a staff member where to submit your documents
  • Submit the paperwork and pay the extension fee

2️⃣ Complete Your Biometrics Appointment

On the date assigned by immigration, return to the office.

Take a queue number and wait for your turn. An officer will take your fingerprints and photograph. The actual biometric process takes only a couple of minutes, but waiting times of one to two hours are common.

Afterward, you’ll leave without your passport, which remains with immigration while the extension is processed.

3️⃣ Collect Your Passport

Once your visa extension has been approved, return to the immigration office one final time to collect your passport.

Your passport will contain the official visa extension stamp, allowing you to stay in Indonesia for an additional 30 days.
