What Is KITAS?

KITAS is a temporary residence permit in Indonesia. The term “KITAS” stands for Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas, which in Indonesian means a limited stay permit card.

Benefits of Having a KITAS

  • You can stay in Indonesia for the entire validity period of your residence permit without needing to leave the country, and you can enter and exit freely with unlimited re-entries.
  • You can open a bank account in an Indonesian bank on your own.
  • You can obtain a local driver’s license (check my guide).
  • You can buy a car or a motorbike.
  • You become eligible for government health insurance after 6 months of holding a KITAS.
  • You can get local discounts of 20–50% on tourist attractions.
  • You can apply for a family KITAS for your spouse and children (processed separately).
  • You can apply for visas to Schengen countries, Japan, and others directly from Indonesia.
  • You can use dedicated immigration counters at airports for arrivals and departures — usually with little to no queues.

Investor KITAS (E28A)

Investor KITAS in Indonesia (E28A)

The Investor KITAS (E28A) is designed for foreign investors or shareholders in foreign-owned companies who want to live in Indonesia and manage their assets.

❗️ You cannot apply for this type of residence permit by yourself — it must be done through an agent. In practice, you are made a shareholder in a company so you can qualify for the KITAS.

You can apply for an Investor KITAS either from within Indonesia or from abroad. The process differs slightly depending on your location:

  • Onshore Application (inside Indonesia)
You must already be in Indonesia on one of the following visas: C1, C2, D1, D2, or D12. You apply through a visa agent and receive your KITAS within approximately 30 days. No visa run is required.
  • Offshore Application (outside Indonesia)
You apply through an agent, wait for approval (around 30 days), and then enter Indonesia with your KITAS already issued. This option is usually cheaper.

💰 Cost:

  • 18 million IDR — offshore
  • 21 million IDR — onshore

⏳ Processing time: up to 1 month

🕔 Validity: 2 years

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months
  • Photo
  • Current or intended address in Indonesia

If you have all the required documents, you can apply by yourself via the official immigration website: evisa.imigrasi.go.id. If you’re missing some documents or prefer a smoother process, it’s better to go through an agency like Bali Love.

Prices are based on applying through an agent, as I wasn’t able to confirm whether it’s possible to apply independently for this type of KITAS.

How to Extend KITAS in Indonesia

A KITAS can be extended up to 6 times. According to Bali Love, extending it independently requires official address registration (local residence registration) in Indonesia. If you don’t have one, an agency can assist with the process for 2.5 million IDR.

FAQs

What are common reasons for KITAS rejection?

Common reasons include incomplete or incorrect documents, insufficient proof of income or funds, issues with the sponsoring company, or inconsistencies in your application. Working with a reliable agent can significantly reduce the risk of rejection.

Can I convert a tourist visa to Kitas while in Bali?

Yes, most visas can be converted to a KITAS while you are in Indonesia. A visa run is not required, as the process can be completed onshore through an agent or, in some cases, independently.

How to get KITAP after KITAS?

KITAP is a permanent residence permit in Indonesia, issued for 5 years. To qualify, your previous KITAS permits must total at least 5 years and be issued through the same sponsoring company.
