Hi, my name is Marat. I’ve traveled to Bali many times and have used both the standard Visa on Arrival (VOA) and the electronic Visa on Arrival (eVOA). The eVOA is more convenient, and in this article, I’ll explain why—and show you exactly how to apply for it online.

Types of Visa on Arrival in Indonesia: VOA vs eVOA

In Indonesia, there are two types of Visa on Arrival:

  1. VOA (Visa on Arrival) — a visa you can purchase at the border, for example at the airport. It costs 500,000 IDR (~$30), and you can pay in cash or by card (Visa / Mastercard / JCB).
  2. eVOA (Electronic Visa on Arrival) — an electronic visa you can apply for in advance on the official website evisa.imigrasi.go.id. It costs 519,500 IDR (~$31).

💰 You can pay for a Visa on Arrival at the airport in dollars or euros. If you plan to pay by card, it’s best to notify your bank in advance to allow transactions in Indonesia — speaking from personal experience.

Why eVOA Is Better Than VOA

  • With an eVOA, you can pass through immigration using autogates (for example, at Bali airport) and avoid long queues. With a regular VOA, you’ll need to go to an immigration officer and wait in the general line.
  • eVOA can be extended online for an additional 30 days. VOA extension requires visiting an immigration office in person (read Bali VOA extension guide)

❗️ To use the autogates, you also need to complete a customs declaration in advance. This can be done online on allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id up to 3 days before arrival, and you should save the QR code on your phone.
