Types of Visa on Arrival in Indonesia: VOA vs eVOA
In Indonesia, there are two types of Visa on Arrival:
- VOA (Visa on Arrival) — a visa you can purchase at the border, for example at the airport. It costs 500,000 IDR (~$30), and you can pay in cash or by card (Visa / Mastercard / JCB).
- eVOA (Electronic Visa on Arrival) — an electronic visa you can apply for in advance on the official website evisa.imigrasi.go.id. It costs 519,500 IDR (~$31).
💰 You can pay for a Visa on Arrival at the airport in dollars or euros. If you plan to pay by card, it’s best to notify your bank in advance to allow transactions in Indonesia — speaking from personal experience.
Why eVOA Is Better Than VOA
- With an eVOA, you can pass through immigration using autogates (for example, at Bali airport) and avoid long queues. With a regular VOA, you’ll need to go to an immigration officer and wait in the general line.
- eVOA can be extended online for an additional 30 days. VOA extension requires visiting an immigration office in person (read Bali VOA extension guide)

❗️ To use the autogates, you also need to complete a customs declaration in advance. This can be done online on allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id up to 3 days before arrival, and you should save the QR code on your phone.
