Bus ride takes about 8 hours, with one stop along the way where you can enjoy a tasty and affordable meal.
π° Ticket Prices (Bus + Ferry Combo)
- Standard Bus: 1,250 THB
- VIP Bus: 1,550 THB – more space, cooler cabin, plus water, a snack, and a blanket. I highly recommend the VIP option for a more comfortable trip.

2οΈβ£ Ferry Transfer in Chumphon

Upon arrival, you’ll transfer to a Lomprayah ferry at the pier in Chumphon. The waiting time is about 1.5 hours. The pier has showers, restrooms, a café, a small shop, and even a lovely beach — perfect for a swim while you wait.
The ferry from Bangkok to Koh Tao has air conditioning and sells snacks and drinks on board.
π Train from Bangkok to Koh Tao
This option requires purchasing separate tickets — one for the train and another for the Lomprayah transfer (bus + ferry). Keep in mind that Lomprayah does not operate the trains.
1οΈβ£ Bangkok to Chumphon by Train
Trains depart from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal Station, the main railway station in Bangkok.
The most convenient choice is Train No. 39, which leaves at 10:50 PM and arrives in Chumphon at 05:22 AM. Ticket price: 515 THB. You can book it here.
2οΈβ£ Bus Transfer to Lomprayah Pier
After arriving in Chumphon, you’ll transfer to a Lomprayah bus, departing at 06:00 AM directly from the train station. This shuttle takes you to the ferry pier.
3οΈβ£ Ferry to Koh Tao
The ferry departs at 07:00 AM, reaching Koh Tao by 08:45 AM. The combined bus and ferry ticket costs 900 THB, and can be booked via this link.
βοΈ Flights from Bangkok to Koh Tao (via Nearby Airports)
Since Koh Tao doesn’t have its own airport, the only way to fly there is by landing at a nearby airport and continuing the journey by bus and ferry.
You can book a flight from Bangkok to one of these three airports near Koh Tao:
- Chumphon Airport – 1,100 to 1,700 THB
- Surat Thani Airport – 950 to 1,200 THB
- Samui Airport – 3,500 to 5,000 THB
After landing, you’ll need to take a bus or van to the ferry pier, followed by a boat to Koh Tao.
Two Ways to Plan This Route:
- Book Separately
Buy a plane ticket on Airasia or another budget airline. Then purchase a separate bus + ferry combo ticket on 12Go:- From Chumphon Airport to Koh Tao: around 1,000 THB
- From Surat Thani Airport to Koh Tao: 1,100–1,200 THB
- From Samui Airport to Koh Tao: 550–750 THB
- Book a Combo Ticket
A more convenient option is to buy a single ticket that includes the flight, bus transfer, and ferry — available for 2,200–2,600 THB on this site.
β What’s the Best Way to Get from Bangkok to Koh Tao?
The most convenient and reliable way of getting from Bangkok to Koh Tao is to book a combined bus + ferry ticket with Lomprayah. Everything is coordinated — transfers are timed perfectly, and there’s minimal risk of delays or missed connections.
Taking a train from Bangkok to Koh Tao or a flight might seem appealing, but delays are more common with separate bookings. Since you’re dealing with multiple companies, Lomprayah won’t be responsible for missed connections. And if you’re flying to save time, remember this: you still need to be at the airport 2 hours early, and the transfer to the pier can take another 1.5 hours.
β And here are some great-value hotels on Koh Tao that I considered:

- The Tarna Resort
- Budchui Village 2 – this is where I stayed.
