Taxi Fare in Bangkok Per Kilometer

Bangkok taxis are metered, and the fare depends on the distance you travel:

10 – 20 km7 Baht/km
20 – 40 km8 Baht/km
40 – 60 km8.5 Baht/km
60 – 80 km9 Baht/km
Over 80 km10.5 Baht/km

Additional Charges:

  • 3 Baht per minute is added if the taxi moves slower than 6 km/h (e.g. in traffic).
  • A 50 Baht surcharge applies when taking a taxi from official ranks at Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang airports.
  • A 20 Baht surcharge applies when booking via the command center during traffic coordination.
  • If the taxi takes a tollway or expressway, the passenger is responsible for paying the toll fees.

You can refer to the fare table below to estimate your taxi cost based on distance.

For example, if you take a taxi from Terminal 21 Mall in Asok (central Bangkok) to Don Mueang Airport—a distance of about 26 km — the meter fare will be approximately 267 Baht.

That said, taxi prices can fluctuate due to traffic and demand. Also, very few people in Bangkok hail taxis on the street anymore. Most locals and expats use ride-hailing apps instead.

Next, let’s compare the prices of these apps for rides from the airport to the city center.

Bangkok Taxi Fare from Airport to City Center

In my guide to the best taxi apps in Bangkok, I highlighted Grab as the most popular option for booking a ride.

Bangkok has two international airports: Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK). Both are located about 26 kilometers from central neighborhoods like Sukhumvit.

When booking with Grab, the fare from the airport to the city center typically falls between 344 and 347 Baht (around $10.50). It’s a useful reference for estimating the average taxi cost in Bangkok for airport transfers.

For more options, check fare estimates in the apps — prices may vary depending on the time of day and traffic conditions.

For more options, check fare estimates in the apps — prices may vary depending on the time of day, traffic, and whether you choose a toll route. Keep in mind that toll fees are not included in the app’s fare estimate. They’re added separately during the ride, but using toll roads is optional.

How Toll Roads Affect Taxi Costs in Bangkok

Bangkok has elevated highways — toll roads designed to help you avoid traffic jams. Motorbikes aren’t allowed on them, and honestly, I love these routes — they save a lot of time.

Taxi drivers usually ask if you’re okay with using toll roads, since the passenger pays the toll fee. If the driver has cash on hand, the fee is often added directly to the app fare. If not, they might ask you to pay the toll in cash during the ride.

Toll fees range from 25 to 90 Baht per section, and a single trip can include multiple segments.

For example, one time I took a taxi from Don Mueang Airport around 5:00 PM — right in the middle of rush hour. The driver used three toll segments, and I ended up paying around 150 Baht in total for the tolls. But when I took the same route at 6:00 AM, with almost no traffic, the driver only used one toll section and the fee was just 50 Baht.

Difference Between Motorbike Taxi and Car Taxi Prices

๐Ÿ›ต Motorbike Taxis

The cheapest and fastest way to get around Bangkok is by using a bike taxi. Motorbikes can easily weave through traffic, avoid jams, and often get you to your destination faster than a car.

A short ride (1–2 km) typically costs 26–35 Baht (around $0.80–$1). You can book bike taxis through apps like Grab, Bolt, Lineman, and inDrive.

Most of the bikes that show up are 110–125cc scooters, which only seat one passenger. Occasionally, larger bikes (150–350cc) appear — these can sometimes accommodate two people, and I’ve ridden that way a few times. It’s surprisingly comfortable.

๐Ÿš— Car Taxis

Car rides in Bangkok usually cost 2 to 5 times more than bike taxis. The exact taxi fare depends on demand:

  • Normal hours: 100–200 Baht ($3–$6)
  • Peak hours: up to 400–500 Baht ($10–$15)

For example, I once took a 19 km ride at 4:00 AM using Grab Save, plus a 10% promo code — it only cost me 160 Baht (about $4.85).

How to Book a Taxi in Bangkok

Time needed: 5 minutes

Booking a taxi in Bangkok is quick and easy if you use a ride-hailing app. Here’s how to get started:

  1. Download a Taxi App

Grab, Bolt, inDrive, or Lineman — any of these will work. Choose the one that feels most convenient for you.

  2. Register with Your Phone Number

Sometimes foreign numbers work for registration, sometimes they don’t. If you run into issues, it’s easiest to get a Thai eSIM. The best prices I’ve found are from AirAlo, Yesim, and Trip.com.

  3. Add a Payment Method

You can link a foreign credit card or a Thai e-wallet. I’ll explain how to set up a Thai wallet in a separate article. Don’t want to deal with that? You can simply pay in cash.

  4. Enter Your Trip Details

Type in your pickup and destination — the app will match you with the nearest available driver.

Cheapest Taxi in Bangkok

In my experience, the cheapest taxi services in Bangkok are Bolt and Lineman. Their base fares are often lower than other apps, making them a great choice if you’re on a budget.

That said, I personally use Grab most of the time. It’s more convenient, the app interface is smooth, and they give out plenty of discount coupons every month. With those, Grab rides often end up being just as cheap — or even cheaper — than other options.
