Bus + Ferry
The best way to get from Bangkok to Koh Phangan is by booking a combined bus and ferry ticket. It’s hassle-free — no need to coordinate connections or buy tickets separately. Here’s how the journey typically goes:
- Purchase a combo ticket on 12Go Asia
- Board a bus either from the Southern Bus Terminal or near Khao San Road in Bangkok
- Travel to the pier in Chumphon Province
- Switch to a ferry to Koh Phangan
- Arrive at Thong Sala Pier on the island
I’ve personally used Lomprayah for this route and highly recommend them. Their service is smooth and reliable. They operate their own pier in Chumphon, while other operators route you through Surat Thani, followed by another bus ride to Donsak Pier — which adds hours to the journey. With Lomprayah Bangkok to Koh Phangan, you get there faster. Plus, both the bus and boat are from the same company, so your connection is guaranteed.

If you want more comfort, go for the VIP bus for about 1,650 baht. It comes with spacious seats, air conditioning, a blanket, bottled water, and a light snack — great for a smoother overnight ride.

Train + Bus + Ferry
Another popular way of getting from Bangkok to Koh Phangan is by taking a train to Chumphon, followed by a bus to the Lomprayah Pier, and then a ferry to the island.
How it works in practice:
- Book a train ticket on this website for a train that arrives in Chumphon before 6:00 AM. The best option is Train No. 39, which has air conditioning. It departs Bangkok and arrives at 05:22 AM. (There are cheaper trains arriving between 3–4 AM, but they don’t have AC.)
- Then, book a bus + ferry combo ticket from Lomprayah on the same site. The bus picks up passengers from Chumphon Railway Station at 6:00 AM and takes them to the pier.
- The ferry departs shortly after, and you’ll arrive at Thong Sala Pier on Koh Phangan at 10:30 AM.
Route Details:
- 🚋 Departure from Bangkok: Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal Station
- 🚌 Transfer Point: Chumphon Railway Station
- 🚤 Ferry Boarding: Lomprayah Pier
- 🏝️ Arrival on Koh Phangan: Thong Sala Pier
Cost Breakdown:
- Train ticket: 515 baht
- Bus + Ferry: 1,250 baht
- Total: 1,765 baht
- Total travel time: approx. 11h 40m
✅ Pros: This option is great if you enjoy traveling by train and want to break up the journey a bit differently than the typical Bangkok – Koh Phangan route.
❌ Cons: You’re buying the train ticket separately, so you’re responsible for making the connection on time
Flight + Bus + Ferry
You can also fly from Bangkok to one of three airports that offer convenient connections to Koh Phangan:
✈️ Bangkok to Chumphon Airport
There’s only one daily flight from Don Mueang Airport (DMK) in Bangkok to Chumphon, operated by AirAsia. It departs at 07:25 and lands at 08:30. After arrival, a Lomprayah bus picks up passengers at 08:50 and takes them to the pier.
Cost Breakdown:
- Bangkok → Chumphon flight: 1,300 – 1,700 baht
- Bus + ferry to Koh Phangan: 1,350 baht (available on 12Go Asia)
- Total: approx. 2,650 baht
However, this route doesn’t save you time. You’ll miss the 7:00 AM ferry, so you’ll have to wait at the pier for the next departure in the afternoon. This means you’ll spend just as much time on the journey as you would taking a bus from Bangkok to Koh Phangan, except much of it will be spent waiting around.
✈️ Bangkok to Surat Thani Airport
Traveling to Koh Phangan via Surat Thani Airport is a more convenient option than flying to Chumphon. Here’s why:
- There are 13 flights per day from Bangkok
- Flights depart from both Don Mueang (DMK) and Suvarnabhumi (BKK) airports
- The airport has multiple daily connections to Koh Phangan, including bus + ferry transfers
Cost Breakdown:
- Bangkok → Surat Thani flight: 1,000 – 1,400 baht
- Bus + ferry to Koh Phangan: around 560 baht (bus) + 950 baht (ferry) Tickets here
- Total: approx. 2,200 baht
- Travel time: ~8 hours (including airport wait and transfers)
Tip: You can buy a combined ticket (flight + bus + ferry) on this page, which makes the entire journey easier and guarantees the connections.
✈️ Bangkok to Koh Phangan via Koh Samui
Flying to Koh Samui only makes sense if you plan to spend some time on Samui first. Direct flights from Bangkok to Samui are convenient but pricey — starting at 4,000 baht, which is significantly more expensive than flying to Chumphon or Surat Thani.
If you choose this route, here’s the ferry schedule from Koh Samui to Koh Phangan.
Final thoughts: If you prefer to avoid long bus rides and would rather fly, the best way to travel from Bangkok to Koh Phangan is via Surat Thani. It’s cheaper, more convenient, and offers more daily connections than either Chumphon or Samui.
