Taxi Apps Don’t Work on Koh Phangan
Grab, Bolt, InDrive, and other taxi apps don’t operate on the island. That leaves you with three options:
- Bring your own transport. You can take a motorbike or car with you on the ferry from Donsak, operated by Raja or Seatran.
- Rent a scooter on arrival. If you’re traveling light, this is a great option. You can rent a motorbike from around 200 baht per day right near the pier — Pajampo is one good spot.
- Use local taxis. This is the most expensive and often the least comfortable option — but sometimes it’s the only one. Koh Phangan has a bit of a taxi mafia: drivers have agreed on fixed high prices and there’s little room for negotiation.
Taxis on Koh Phangan Are Called Songthaews

A songthaew (which means “two rows” in Thai) is a pickup truck with two bench seats in the back, covered by a roof. It’s a hybrid between a minibus and a truck — the island’s main form of public transport.
Songthaews run fixed routes between major areas, including Thong Sala Pier, Haad Rin, Chaloklum, and Thong Nai Pan, as well as other popular spots around the island.
Taxi (Songthaew) Prices on Koh Phangan
Taxi drivers usually charge a fixed rate per person, regardless of the distance. Here are the typical prices:
- Thong Sala → Haad Rin, Sri Thanu, or Chaloklum — 200 baht
- Thong Sala → Thong Nai Pan or other remote areas — 300 baht
How to Get a Taxi on Koh Phangan
As soon as you walk a few dozen meters from the pier, local taxi drivers will surround you. They all charge the same fixed rates and aren’t interested in negotiating — just pick one, save their number, and call them when needed.

You can also flag down a songthaew from the roadside — simply raise your hand and tell the driver your destination. If there’s space in the back, they’ll let you hop on.
By the way, here’s the WhatsApp of the driver who took me from my hotel to the pier: wa.me/66656463364. There were three of us, and we paid 200 baht per person.
UPD: now people say he charges 400 baht per person
How to Save Money on a Taxi from the Pier
If you’re arriving on Koh Phangan by boat or ferry, the staff on board often offer a hotel transfer for around 150 baht per person. That’s 50 baht cheaper than hiring a taxi at the pier.
Go ahead and say yes — it’s a better deal than trying to find a songthaew after you arrive.

I have contacted your taxi. He charges 500 baths for a 10 min drive, thatβs insanely more than 200 baths. You should update your article.
