The D12 visa is a solid option if you’re planning to live in Indonesia for 1–2 years and travel abroad from time to time. If you don’t plan to leave the country at all, it’s usually better to apply for a Remote Worker KITAS right away. Below, I’ll explain why.

What Is the D12 Visa?

How Indonesian D12 Visa looks like

The D12 is a pre-investment visa for Indonesia. Officially, it’s designed for people who want to explore the Indonesian market before starting a business or making an investment.

In reality, many people use it simply to live in Bali for a year. 😉

Key Features

  • Validity: 1 or 2 years
  • Multiple entry: Yes. It’s a multiple-entry visa. Each time you re-enter Indonesia, a new 180-day stay period begins.
  • How to apply: Online through a visa agency, since a sponsorship letter from an Indonesian company is required.
  • Processing time: 5–9 working days
  • Extension: You can stay in Indonesia for 180 days and then either extend your stay for another 180 days or do a visa run.
  • Cost:
    • 7,500,000 IDR — 1-year visa
    • 12,000,000 IDR — 2-year visa
    • 4,500,000 IDR — 180-day extension
  • Where to apply: From outside Indonesia
  • Can it be converted to KITAS? Yes.

How Long Can You Stay in Indonesia with a D12 Visa?

The D12 visa is issued for 1–2 years and allows you to stay in Indonesia for up to 180 consecutive days per entry, instead of using a Visa on Arrival or C1 visa, which require extensions every 30 or 60 days.

After the first 180 days, you have two options:

  1. Extend your stay for another 180 days, or
  2. Leave Indonesia and re-enter (a visa run).

❗️ Important: The visa becomes valid from the date of issuance, not from the date you enter Indonesia. In this sense, the D12 works very similarly to Thailand’s DTV visa.

D12 Visa Cost

Most people apply for the D12 visa through an agency, since a sponsorship letter from an Indonesian company is required.

Here are the prices from a reliable agency I’ve personally worked with — Bali Love:

  • 1-year visa — 7,500,000 IDR
  • 2-year visa — 12,000,000 IDR
  • 180-day extension — 4,500,000 IDR
  • Express processing (5 working days instead of 9) — 2,000,000 IDR

🤑 I’ve arranged a 10% discount with Bali Love using the promo code “Marat Nomad.”

How to Get a D12 Visa

You can only apply for a D12 visa while staying outside Indonesia. It’s not possible to convert a C1 visa or a Visa on Arrival (VOA) into a D12.

📄 Required Documents

  • A passport valid for at least 6 months at the time of entry into Indonesia
  • A bank statement for the last 3 months showing a minimum balance of $5,000 (or equivalent in another currency)
  • A recent color photo (a smartphone photo is fine)
  • A sponsorship letter from an Indonesian company
  • Your CV outlining your professional background
  • A travel itinerary for Indonesia

If you’re missing any documents, agencies usually help resolve the issue. There are many Indonesian agencies that handle D12 visas. Personally, I recommend Bali Love.

Step-by-Step: Applying for a D12 Visa

  1. Contact an agency
  2. Send scans or photos of your documents.
  3. Wait 5–9 working days for approval.
  4. Receive your visa by email.

❗️ Important for families:

If you first apply for a D12 visa for yourself and later decide to get the same visa for your child, that won’t work. You need to apply together as a family from the start. Otherwise, your child will need to obtain a different type of visa.

What You Can and Can’t Do on a D12 Visa

✅ You can:

  • Stay in Indonesia for tourism purposes or to visit friends and family
  • Attend events, exhibitions, and seminars as a participant
  • Convert the visa into another type of visa or residence permit (KITAS)

❌ You cannot:

  • Engage in income-generating activities within Indonesia

This means you’re not allowed to work locally or provide services inside the country. That said, remote work for clients or companies outside Indonesia is generally tolerated in practice. Issues tend to arise more often with photographers and other freelancers who provide offline services to clients physically located in Indonesia.

You can find more Indonesian visa types in my other article.

How to Extend a D12 Visa

You can extend your D12 visa once per stay for an additional 180 days. This means you can remain in Indonesia for up to one full year without leaving the country.

Step-by-Step: Extending a D12 Visa:

  1. Contact your agency 10–14 days before your current 180-day period expires.
  2. Submit your passport to the agency and pay the extension fee.
  3. Wait 10–14 working days for processing.
  4. Receive your passport back with the extended stay permit.

Which Is Better: D12 Visa or KITAS?

If you’re planning to live in Indonesia for one full year without leaving the country, a Remote Worker KITAS (E33G) is usually a better option than the D12. Here’s why.

  • The price is almost the same
A D12 visa with one extension will cost around 12,000,000 IDR. A Remote Worker KITAS costs about 13,000,000 IDR. The difference is just 1,000,000 IDR — not significant.
  • KITAS gives you more benefits
As a KITAS holder, you can:
    • Open bank accounts at any Indonesian bank
    • Apply for a local driver’s license on your own, without посредники
    • Get local health insurance
    • Receive local resident discounts at tourist attractions
    • Apply for visas to Japan, Schengen countries, and other destinations from within Indonesia
    • After 5 years, apply for a KITAP (permanent residence permit)
